Nothing really interests me here…everyone seems to be into the new Clutch but I’ve never liked them.

Schwab is a decent to very good lyricist, but I haven’t liked P86’s music too much since Drawing Black Lines.

There’s this Japanese trio (drums, piano, keyboard) called Mouse on the Keys that I THINK released their full length today, in Japan. They are phenomenal.

I still like Project 86. Meh. Mostly because of what Jay said: Andrew’s lyrics are pretty decent, especially in the scene now. I loved what he did with everything from Songs to Burn… and before. I don’t think they’re a groundbreaking band by any means, but good stuff to listen to every once in a while, definitely.

We Were Gentleman’s release may see a purchase from me, however. I was a huge fan of Winter Solstice, so obviously I listened to them as soon as I figured out the vocalist moved to this band. It’s not too bad.

I think I’ll probably always be a Project 86 fan. I know people say that they’re really not ground-breaking or anything, but when I think of all of the bands I listen to, Project 86 probably comes closest to having their own sound. I don’t feel like they’ve ever really been part of a specific genre or trend.

    ^^^ What he said.

I’ve never seen a band successfully rip them off.
    Or even try to.
Project 86 is Project 86, and that’s all they’ll ever be.

    Same thing with Blindside.
I think they did a good job of making their own sound.

See, for the past couple records I’ve held that Project 86 has been stealing blatantly from Marilyn Manson, but I’ve had enough people argue that point that I second guess it now.

But yeah, Songs to Burn… and before were all stellar records. I used to be a complete P86 fanboy. Those were the days.

I will probably also forever be a project 86 fanboy as well. I loved them in their heyday, and they continue to reinvent themselves in a refreshing way with each record. Sure, their influences are evident, but it’s tough to argue they’re a blantent rip-off of any specific artist. Like David M said, Project 86 is Project 86, and you’ll always find a trace of that band that wrote Drawing Black Lines 10 years ago with each new record.

The new Clutch sounds a bit like a bit of a throwback to Blast Tyrant. This = awesome.

mew’s still around? ill check that out.
    stavesacre, too?

the only project 86 i ever listened too was drawing black lines. and a little of the one that came out after it, so i can’t weigh in on their evolution. but that early stuff was legit, for sure.

Close my grip on the floodgates and lean on the back of the covenant sealed in dreams
    Anticipate the backlash
    Uncountable grins fade to screams
Doubt’s an ocean away on a sea that my last mistake drowned unwillingly
I don’t have the trust to float inside the waves that seek to spill me

    Awesome.

  13. On 07/14/09 3:30 PM, Josh Mock said:

Jeez, that takes me back. Schwab was a champ back then. Compare this to the lyrics of “Caveman Jam” off their last album:

I made my way back to the merch booth after
A man confronts me, smiling ear to ear
The sweat is dripping from his face in gallons
And all he wants to do is shake my hand
(Then he) stops to tell me he’d be six feet under
That’s if it wasn’t for our caveman jams

  14. On 07/14/09 5:25 PM, George said:

Thank you Jay and Josh Mock. You are both correct, and prove why I no longer buy Project 86 albums. But 10 years ago they couldn’t be touched. Remember that b-side they had called “Numb?” It was awesome. Truthless Heroes had a few gems on it, but that’s where it all started going downhill for me.

  15. On 07/15/09 1:19 AM, Jamison said:

To be fair, Rival Factions did have its share of good lyrics too. Also, it’s ironic that you bring up Caveman Jam, since that song is about how Schwab doesn’t feel the need to satisfy everyone’s’ taste/intellect. I have always felt that he has put a lot of effort into his work/art in the past, although sometimes it takes me a few listens to get, I usually realize that he still does.

i’m starting to sense a bit of disdain for “Christian” bands from jay, why?

or i have i not read enough reviews to correctly draw this conclusion.

@Gabe I can’t speak for Jay, but I know I have. I’m tired of seeing rehashed bands over and over, because it seems like the Christian scene has lost the initiative to make quality music. Yes, the message is important, I understand that, but it’s going to help your case if you actually play your instruments WELL and write stuff that’ll challenge you instead of open chords all over the board. Not saying secular bands don’t do that, but within the Christian music scene, good, talented bands that are going above and beyond are hard to find. That’s just my thoughts on it.

Coincidence, if there is any disdain.
