No More New Records, Distribution from Touch and Go

It hurts my heart to report this, but Touch and Go Records has announced that it will shut down its distribution and stop putting out new albums. In addition to being one of the best labels of the last 30 years and being responsible for furthering the careers of more than a few iconic indie rockers, they also distribute releases for Merge, Kill Rock Stars, Drag City, Suicide Squeeze, Flameshovel, Jade Tree and Post Present Medium. In other words, uh oh.

At least the new Crystal Antlers album and the Jesus Lizard stuff (reissues and seven-inch box set) will still be released, though. I’m serious y’all, this is a flag-at-half-staff kind of thing for the music community.

And I can’t stop thinking about where my beloved Ted Leo will go now, especially since there have been plenty of whispers about him planning a new album for 2009.

UPDATE: T&G label head Corey Rusk has said that he hopes to put out new music again at some point. I’d seen hints about this around the internets, but nothing as strong as the information Matthew Johnson posted in the comments (good man). So there is still hope!

UPDATE: Touch and Go has clarified the information it gave to Pitchfork. We were originally told that the label will no longer be releasing new music. However, the label has since clarified that it hopes to once again release new music at some point in the future, once the dust has settled from the restructuring brought about by the shuttering of its distribution arm.

Nonetheless. Still sad. T&G has put out some wicked releases over the years. One of my faves.
