Two things stuck out to me during Yo La Tengo‘s Louisville stop last week. They weren’t especially bad things. Just stuff that stayed with me after the show. And neither had to do with the music.
The band made the worst use of the space that was alotted them on stage. They spent most of the time bottled up in the corner, as if the stage was a basement and they needed to make room for the crowd. You’d think that after 20 years of being the biggest little indie band in the world that they’d be used to have a stage wider than 10 feet.
And then there was the crowd. I’ve never seen so many 40-year-old dudes with miniscule chin whiskers and thick black frames, wearing girl jeans and short-sleeve button down shirts in one place. Keep living the life, boys. Being a barista or video store clerk at 40 still beats owning a home, right?

So you can tell where they work just by judging their fashion? Should they decide you must be in a hardcore band, or are a bartender, because you have a scruffy beard and are bigger than them? lol

P.S.
So I totally should’ve come to that show. It would be nice to run into you again after all these years.
