Rock Opera Tommy Turns 40, Gets Worldwide Digital Release

It was 1969 when The Who released Tommy and sparked an entire rock and roll subgenre (the rock opera). And now 40 years later, a version of Tommy by the London Symphony Orchestra and Chambre Choir with Guest Vocalists (long name for an album with such a short title, right?) will be getting a worldwide digital release next week to celebrate.

The album features performances from Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, Rod Stewart, John Entwistle, Merry Clayton, Steve Winwood, Richie Havens, Richard Harris, Ringo Starr, Maggie Bell, Graham Bell and Sandy Denny.

If you’re extra excited to hear people that used to be famous sing 40-year-old songs with oboes and timpanis on your iPod, the album is available a week early thanks to iTunes.
