Stream Sam Billen’s New Record

Sam Billen

A few years back, I was digging on just about everything Northern Records was putting out. Then they kinda stopped putting out music I cared about. Actually, I think they pretty much stopped putting out music at all for a little while.

One of the band’s from their roster I was in love with the most at that point was The Billions. Sure there was a pretty heavy Flaming Lips vibe on their second record, and they were from Lawrence, Kan., during the time when everyone else seemed to be from there, too. But it didn’t feel like they were straight aping the Lips, and their sound wasn’t interchangeable with a lot of Lawrence bands whose sound was totally interchangeable with other Kansans.

Eventually, the band a little break up/hiatus/almost still together kind of thing, so I lost track. But frontman Sam Billen has resurfaced with Headphones & Cellphones, and our pals over at The Record Machine are streaming the entire album in addition to offering a download for just $2. It’s a little more electronic and somber than The Billions, but Billen’s songwriting chops aren’t any less present.
