Switchfoot – Mess of Me (Live on Conan O’Brien)

It’s still weird for me to think that Switchfoot began in a very similar fashion to Relient K lyrically and thematically (they did have a song called Might Have Ben Hur, after all). Then they started writing songs about Kierkegaardian proto-existentialism instead of stuff about girlfriends getting eaten and TV shows from the ’80s.

But seriously…I haven’t gotten into the new one, really. Their past stuff is super solid though.

Foreman’s got the Seth Roberts kind of vocals (or the other way around, really)…just gets me every time. But the new one he starts effing with his voice and it annoys me.

Their new album is alright nothing compared to some of their old stuff which I really like a lot more. John’s voice seems to has changed and im not really liking it too much. But they still are an amazing band and always will be.

I totally disagree with everyone. Musically they haven’t been any better, and lyrically only Nothing Is Sound somewhat surpasses. I have idea what you guys are smokin’. Acording to the Switchfoot guys this is their best musically and emotionally and they went through so much pain to make it. And personally I prefer the Kierkegaardian proto-existentialism a million times over some crappy reliant K tongue and cheek trash. As for his voice it hasn’t changed that much, if at all, and even then I think it’s way better.

So… Has anyone actually listened to Relient K’s new album then?

I actually like his vocals a lot better on this album. This also isn’t quite as poppy to me. They’ve bored me to tears on the last couple of albums. I don’t think I’d buy this album, but I might buy as many as four tracks.

They’ve toured together and even done a collaboration…
And Relient K has been going in a similar direction lyrically (the songs mentioned in the post are on their first 2 albums). Still not entirely sure why Switchfoot is taken so much seriously (other than Foreman’s solo and side project work which actually deserves it)
