The Dead Weather – Horehound

What do you get when you take the best parts of The White Stripes, The Kills, Queens of the Stone Age and Raconteurs, throw in some spontaneity and add two weeks in a studio? Pure awesome, that’s what. I might even venture to say the awesome is concentrated enough to surpass the awesomeness of the works of all those other bands.
Jack White’s fingerprints are all over The Dead Weather, and he only sings on one or two songs. The rest of his time is spent behind the drums, making me wonder why he’s avoided that position until now. And Alison Mosshart is pure sex. Plus there are some blistering blues guitar solos — and a cool vintage organ sound.
Whoever said that the blues is dead deserves a slap in the face. Luckily Horehound is just that: a brisk, grungy, dirty, sexy slap in the face — in the best way possible.

I just realized that Alison was the lead singer of Discount…one of my absolute favorite bands back in High School (Their contribution, Nightmare 22, to “Songs That Will Make You Cool!” was the best on the comp). Anyway, to read her being described as pure sex is kind of funny considering what she used to look like…if you’re curious, check out the Aversion interview with her back in her Discount days by clicking on the link on my name. She’s come a very long way, but I still love Discount the most!
