Understatement of the Year: Flaming Lips Frontman Isn’t Friends With Arcade Fire
Maybe Wayne Coyne thinks he can talk trash now that Oklahoma’s official rock song is a Flaming Lips jam. Then again, maybe Coyne just caught Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler stealing a basketball or cheating black people out of their music. Either way, he’s not too high on Arcade Fire these days. From Coyne:
I’m a fan of them on one level, but on another level I get really tired of their pompousness. We’ve played some shows with them and they really treat people like shit. Whenever I’ve been around them, I’ve found that they not only treated their crew like shit, they treated the audience like shit. They treated everybody in their vicinity like shit.
Anyone can be polite and kind and people who have the privilege and money and attention should understand that. If they don’t, then fuck ‘em.

I read about this whole thing on pitchfork this morning. Win’s response to that did nothing for me – Wayne is great because he calls it like he sees it. This is not to say Coyne can’t be a jerk himself, but he publicly called out a band that truly deserved it. The Arcade Fire are the epitome of pompous, pretentous overhyped “indie” BS and I’m glad he called them out on their attitude.

Being called out by Wayne Coyne for being pompous is like being called out by Rollins for being a poser. Credibility has its perks.

I worked with a band that toured with the Lips back in 90’s and I hung out with them for a few nights…
Wayne Coyne is a knobhead. Really. He’s an idiot.
And I don’t say that about many people.
