Andrew W.K. Rebuffs Rumors After Admitting They Are Partly True

Yesterday Andrew W.K. went out of his way to combat rumors that he’s a fake and part of a conspiracy being perpetuated by the music industry to steal money from people and control their minds. He vehemently denies the charges and asserts his status as a real person making music.
However, the big issue here is that these rumors have intensified as of late thanks to statements from Andrew W.K. himself. He might not be part of a media-led mind control conspiracy (although it’s still up for debate as to whether he’s part of a reverse engineering conspiracy involving the shadow government and the reptoids), but it doesn’t change the fact that he admitted he’s not the original Andrew W.K. during a recent lecture in London. So while there’s no mind control involved, there is obviously a good bit of deception and shadiness.
But who cares. Any dude who goes off like W.K. is tops pops in my book. Now let’s get a party going.

So is the entirety of Andrew WK history (childhood, musical training, etc.) part of the conspiracy and this guy is just an actor playing the part?
At one point did the current Andrew WK take over?
This shit is insane!

As it looks according to the stuff I’ve read, the new guy took over about 2005.

His rebuff actually never says that I am not the original AWK. Looking at the line “Andrew W.K. is about partying and doing what you want,” he’s still being vague and speaking about “AWK” as someone else.

@Sean There is something about this that bothers me.
@tAlex – I’m not sure how this is possible–what you’re saying–unless Andrew Wilkes-Krier has an identical twin, who is also “in” on things… The same person has physically acted as the stage persona of AWK since “I Get Wet”–looks pretty fucking similar to me–though I might be advised to say that this person is on steroids (seems to be a valid accusation in 2010). Then again, he says he’s not the original AWK, so… whatever…
@Sean – Back to the “this bothers me” part… that being, why this matters in the first place?
Take for instance this interview piece, with Nardwuar from a few years back: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilKuJOe2goA
If someone were to tell me that the Nardwuar character (“played” by John Ruskin) was a concept put together by a committee, primarily with a financial interest in mind, it wouldn’t matter at all. The guy IS the character, and at least in this situation, such a committee would have to have an amazingly dry sense of humor if the character was put in place with the motive of makin’ bank.
This makes a little more sense for AWK though. He’s not signed to Alternative Tentacles and Mint, like Nardwuar is, so right away he’s actually likely to gain some sort of income from record sales. (That sounds like a slight against AT & M, not my intention.) That, AND he’s been through the ringer with an MTV “reality” show, spots on outlets like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and, of course, his spoken word tours. So there is a market for whatever it is he’s doing, and such an accusation as “he’s a stooge” seems to have a little more validity, given the $ income… yada yada yada.
What bothers me isn’t the likelihood that this is true–which it might be, or it might not be–but that making an issues does nothing but drum up unnecessary negativity toward a “character” who is overwhelmingly robust in positivity and charm. If I were to see Ruskin on the street, I’m not going to shout “Hi John!” Sure as shit I’m shouting “Holy balls, it’s fucking Nardwuar!!!” That’s a fact, jack.
Same thing here. Andrew Wilkes-Krier is Andrew WK, in the same sense as Ruskin is Nardwuar, Shaquille O’Neil is Shaq, Justin Timberlake is JT, et al.
That last one is actually kind of relevant here, because Justin’s career has never not been led with a corporate interest in mind… and while he’s become increasingly humorous through the years as his personality has been allowed to shine through (I really like that commercial with him and Peyton Manning playing ping-pong… “It’s on fiya”), the guy’s career isn’t nearly as focused on positivity and finding the honest meaning of your personal life as Andrew’s. So fuck it. If the guy’s name is really TJ Smith and he’s from Kentucky, I still think TJ Smith has made a tremendously positive impact on countless people’s lives. Who the hell am I to fault the guy for making a living in the process?
Also, I think Andrew WK’s music is the shit. Even his piano CD was OK. (Man, I might really need to reconsider having a blog or something, apparently I have words still inside of me.)
The intimate discussion scheduled at the Santos Party House in Feb should, hopefully, shed a little more light on this matter. Not that it matters.

Sheez, Chris…TLDR!
Just kidding. You bring up some valid points and I think the reason this “matters” is because there are a lot of people in the scene who like Andrew WK but wouldn’t piss on NSync if they were on fire. Now, though, it seems that Andrew WK is exactly like those manufactured boy bands and that is bound to ruffle some feathers.
Me? I don’t care. I’m more intrigued by the Really?!?ZOMG-factor of it all. Music urban legends make me all giddy inside.

-Do you guys think it would ruffle the feathers of grindcore kids to find out that the band X-AM is the same kind of deal? That it’s actually just some dude with a pitchshifter on his voice and 3 girls posing for all of the pictures & videos?
Maybe this happens more than we realize.

Still doesn’t make much difference, but I’m surprised by the output of appeared confused, though that could simply be a play on getting a little more juice out of this. Whoknowsy’know?

hmm, it’s really tough to get a read on the whole situation, but my guess is that the whole shebang has been one big publicity grab.

Kinda feels that way… the disease of the situation felt a little too forced. Can’t say I’ve ever seen the guy stutter or fumble for words. Ah well, was fun while it lasted.
