Old and Jaded: My Abstract Tribute to Stretch Arm Strong

For shame, little peanuts! I got no listening suggestions last week so I spent my time listening to old Thursday and Taking Back Sunday records. I place the blame solely on you. Although, Autobiography of a Nation is still a pretty bad ass song.
Welcome to another Old and Jaded, Buzzgrinderers! This edition promises to be especially jaded — so strap in.
I bought my ticket to the Dashboard Confessional Swiss Army Romance tour, and I honestly don’t know what to expect. I mean, are they still popular enough with the kiddies that I’m going to be surrounded by 15-year-olds? Or is it going to be people my age standing toward the back of the venue with our hands in our pockets or arms crossed?
For the record, arms crossed was my go to stance back in the day.
In honor of the show, I’m going to restart my Makeout Club account with the profile heading, “Swallow, choke, and die.” I always liked how MOC said they weren’t a dating site, but yeah right. That’s all it was; Match.com for kids who liked The Anniversary and had Exploding Dog tattoos.
For the record, I love Exploding Dog.
One thing that gets my goat is when people talk about how awesome music was back in the 1960s. “That’s when there were realmusicians making realmusic,” they’ll repeat ad nauseum. “You want good music? Listen to The Beatles or The Rolling Stonesor The Beach Boys. That stuff is timeless!”
Well, no shit. That isgood music, so it has stood the test of time. But hey, guess what? There were a ton of crappy bands back then, too. But we don’t really talk about them. You know why? Because their music sucked, and people stopped listening to them.
Awful music is always going to be around, but once the climate changes, whatever particular band was crapping up the airwaves (read: Limp Bizkit) will fall out of favor.
LimpBizkit was huge. Mothereffin’ huge in the late ‘90s. You know who will remember their albums in 20, 30 or 40 years? No one! Well, no one except producers of VH1 talking head shows.
You know what albums from the late ‘90s people will remember? OK Computer, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, Either/Or. The goodstuff.
For the record, I owned Three Dollar Bill, Y’all.
Alright, peanuts, don’t let me down again this week. Get in your suggestions. They’ve been awesome so far, and I’ve purchased something from everyone I’ve listened to so far. So here’s your chance to help make some money for one of your favorite bands.
I’ll see you next week at the same O&J time, same O&J channel. Maybe even IRL (OMGZ!) at Buzzgrinder’s SXSW Birthday Spectacular Spectacular. Anyone going?

If there is one band that I have been recommending for the last couple months it’s Big Kids. These guys are from Oakland, CA and play some pretty awesome Punk Rock but in a Hot Water Music and Bear Vs. Shark sort of way. But poppier! They’re album Hoop Dreams was one of my favorite releases last year.

well shit i thought i was disqualified. maybe i have my weeks mixed up. old and jaded i guess.
Listen to the new defeater, especially if you’ve been listening to old thursday. So far, I’ve been alone in drawing the comparisons (between my friends and I), especially considering defeaters previous fare (above average bridge nine hardcore), but damn if the new album doesn’t remind me of early thursday songwriting. except for the last quarter of the record…it takes a turn down bright eyes lane for some reason. I’d cry foul, but how many old punk band singers are doing that shit full time now? they juggle it at the same time. ballz.
Maybe I am crazy.

Cop Shoot Cop was sprung on me while I was captive in someone’s backseat, and to this day, “Ten Dollar Bill” increases my heartrate.

If you haven’t already, River City Extension is highly enjoyable. They have an ep Nautical Sabbatical and an album And the Unmistakable Man. Start with ‘Something Salty, Something Sweet’ or ‘Elephant.’ 8 person folk from New Jersey.
