One of the Most Fun Nights of My Life

Maritime’s new album, Human Hearts, is out today. And not only did the band allow Buzzgrinder to stream the whole thing, but the guys were also kind enough to take over posting duties for the day. Gives us time to prepare for our IFOCE fantasy league draft.

Since our real lives have taken over and touring will be harder — nay, “more deliberate and specific” than normal — I got it in my head that I want to have a video for every song on our new album, Human Hearts. This is to make up for the possibility that we might not show up in any certain city across this great land of ours.

Finding the talent to make this a possibility is no easy feat, but over the years and at my current job I have met a lot of talented directors that I could coerce into doing videos for us. On this one particular Tuesday (word on the street was that Milwaukee was going to be hit by ‘the worst blizzard since ‘67), my boss, Barry Poltermann, came into my edit suite and said, “Remember when you asked me to direct a video for you guys? Well how about tonight? Outside. In the blizzard.”

Needless to say, not much actual work got done that day as we were all too busy setting up and coordinating for the shoot. I decided it would be easiest for us to shoot in four separate locations (to allow for more interesting/different shots) which were all of our backyards, except for mine. The unifying thing would be the headphones that we all would wear to give the illusion that we are all listening to each other.

When it was my turn, we tried to shoot in my backyard, but for some reason the storm didn’t seem violent enough. So we went to the lakefront by my house. I have never experienced wind that strong and violent in my life (Ryan Dembroski, one of the shooters shot this video to give you an idea). They ended up having to shoot in front of the pavilion because it blocked just enough of the wind.

I had my car there, so in between takes (luckily I only had to do three) I would run into my car to warm up while they got set up again. On the way back to my house (which is only a block away from where we just shot), my car got stuck twice! The crew deserves a special recognition for the hours they spent outside during this crazy blizzard to get these amazing shots. Kudos to Barry, Ryan, Rob Schoonover and Travis Starr.
