Jon Bunch Discusses Sense Field’s Beginnings, Lyrical Inspiration

Jon Bunch of Sense Field, Reason to Believe and (briefly) Further Seems Forever recently discussed why he started singing (“The reason why I sang was because I didn’t have an instrument.”), breaking away from his early “scene” days, (“I didn’t want to play shows where it was predominately a gang fight.”) and the inspiration behind his lyrics:
I’m singing to the broken people because I’m a broken person. I’m right there with all the rest of the broken people in the world. I’m singing to people who have felt hopeless, because I’ve felt that way before too. Not all the time, but many times. It was a band for broken people. Some people got it, some people didn’t. Some people are broken, some people aren’t.

Sense Field is a band I never really checked out for some reason. They seem to get forgotten pretty often…probably because of that terrible band with the really similar name.

I remember finding the “Part of the Deal” EP in the used section at Ear X-Tacy during a visit to Louisville years and years and years ago. I wore that thing out.
I still think about them from time to time. Sense Field is one of those bands I feel compelled to revisit, so I can see if my admiration was a product of the times or if there’s something genuinely good there.
