Winehouse in Trouble With the Law…Again

This post could also be titled “Water Is Wet” or “Sun Is Hot.” Amy Winehouse was arrested today in connection for the crack smoking video that got everyone talking a few month back. Winehouse’s spokesman, Chris Goodman, said she “voluntarily attended a London police station today by appointment. She was arrested in order to be interviewed and is cooperating fully with inquiries.”

I didn’t know that you had to be arrested to be interviewed by the bobbies. But we’re talking about the English, after all. You know, the people who invented ugly teeth.

Liferuiner Members Arrested for Tagging

liferuiner.jpg

Looks like the name Liferuiner just got ironic for the “fill-in singer and former drummer.”

“Two members of a hardcore punk band called Liferuiner were among four young men arrested this weekend in connection with a “rampant graffiti spree” in Toronto’s west end.

The musicians, whose song titles include You Call Me Son, I Call You Dead and You Look Better When You’re Drunk, were arrested late Friday night in the town of Uxbridge - nearly 90 kilometres away from scene of the alleged vandalism - where the band kicked off what was supposed to be a 43-city tour through Canada and the United States.”

Somehow the band will be able to continue their tour. Maybe the fill-in dude was a decoy or something.

My favorite is this:

Various businesses, including a commercial photography studio, an Asian produce depot and a perfume importer, have been sprayed-painted with similar messages such as “Riff Raff,” “Get Loose!” and “Cahoots!”

Get Loose? Hey Liferuiner, 1988 called, they want their catch phrases back.

Ticketmaster Buys SLO Limited, Strengthens Monopoly

Ticketmaster has recently purchased the ticketing agency SLO Limited. This is only the most recent of a string of ticketing agency  ‘absorbtions’ by TM. Let’s start a pool and guess which year service charges grow beyond the cost of the ticket. I ask you this: Where is the younger, more brazen Pearl Jam when you need them?

No Bail for Accused Linda Stein Killer

Natavia Lowery, charged with the murder of Linda Stein (one time co-manager of The Ramones), “was denied bail Wednesday even though the defense argued new DNA evidence justified it.”

“Lowery is accused of using a heavy stick to beat Stein, 61, once a co-manager of the rock group the Ramones. Stein was found facedown in a pool of blood in her Fifth Avenue apartment around 10:20 p.m. on Oct. 30. She had scalp cuts and a fractured skull.”

T.I. Gets To Go To Church

Must be a slow news day when we’re talking about T.I.’s weekend plans. Despite not granting him permission to host Thanksgiving dinner while on house arrest, the court has decided to let him go to church for Easter.

I’m getting these visions in my head of T.I. at his Easter Sunday service talking about big things poppin’ out of graves and asking people what they know about that.

Wow. No more jokes for me. Have a good Easter weekend.

Maxim Reviews Leaked Albums?

The Black Crowes are pissed at Maxim Magazine writer David Peisner for reviewing their latest CD without actually, ummm… listening to it. A minor issue, right? Says a “person (at Maxim) in charge of editing the mag’s music coverage“, in their email exchange with the band:

‘Of course, we always prefer to (sic) hearing music, but sometimes there are big albums that we don’t want to ignore that aren’t available to hear, which is what happened with the Crowes. It’s either an educated guess preview or no coverage at all, so in this case we chose the former.’”

The comical part is the band seems to think this reviewer couldn’t have possibly heard the album, “since advance CDs were not made available.” You know, since albums never leak before their release date. Ever. I can’t remember the last time something like that happened.

In the end Maxim Magazine looks like a bunch of two bit hacks rather than admitting to possessing an illegally obtained copy of an album. This is possible when your magazine is noted more for its boobies than its music coverage credibility. Could I be wrong? Sure. But that still means Maxim made up a review. [link, A.V. Club]

Dead To Fall Busted For Drugs

Less than a week before their new album released, Dead To Fall were detained on drug possession charges:

On our way to eat at the local soup kitchen for the homeless, various members of our band were detained after a local “super cop” used his hawk-like vision to notice a lack of proper seatbelt usage. In a baffling twist of events, the officer speculated that out of the five of us sketchy looking dudes that live in the van, one or more of us could have been ‘reefering.’

The Matches Talk Album Leaks

Epitaph artists The Matches are taking a different approach than Victory Records regarding illegal album downloads for their upcoming A Band In Hope (due out March 18).

When you download or rip the album, do something nice for a stranger. Give a dollar to one.org. Jumpstart a car. Give a rose to an old woman eating alone. Leave an open ended love letter in someone’s shoe at the gym. But actually, those examples are not as great as the ones you will come up with! Take a video of it on your camera or cameraphone or if you don’t have that, take a photo, or draw a picture, and send it to us (or yousendit.com it if it’s a big file) to us at abandinhopepayment@gmail.com

Of course, when March 18th rolls around, it’s still hugely helpful to us if you buy the record. Yet we only ask that you purchase it if you love it and/or want to/ have the means to support us.

Yoko Ono Suing Lennon

According to her Myspace blog, solo artist Lennon is being sued by Yoko Ono for - you guessed it:

Yoko seeks to gain the rights to the Trademark “LENNON” which Lennon Murphy has owned since 2003. This lady is a scum bag and so is her lawyer Peter Shukat who first became aware of Lennon in 2000 when approached by Arista records for consent by Yoko and the John Lennon estate to release Lennon’s debut 5:30 Saturday Morning CD under the name “LENNON.” They made no objections at that time, nor did they for the next 8 years. Now everything Lennon has worked for is on the line, if Yoko prevails, Lennon might never be able to tour or release records using the name Lennon.

Victory Records Fighting Album Leaks

Victory Records makes a statement about leaked albums and what they’re doing about it:

“Victory Records is taking a step towards actively combating the effect of illegal downloads on the music industry, by issuing cease and desist letters to those found guilty of leaking Victory Records’ albums on the internet.”

Anyone get one? I mean, I know Buzzgrinder readers don’t download illegally. Maybe you know “a friend” who got one? Well, this kid got one. I’d say it’s a bad move to post the full letter, but hey, Across Five Aprils posted it, too. Stay classy, boys!

“In recent weeks, comment activity on various message boards across the web has exploded with praises on the albums. While the artists and employees of Victory Records appreciate the positive feedback, it is a bit alarming to realize the number of individuals who have acquired the entire album, pre-release date.”

On a serious note, let’s forget about the bands for a minute; record label employees need to eat, too. I know some people at labels and they’re thin and ragged, and that’s because they’re modeling for part-time work.

See, labels continue to hurt, and it’s going to trickle down. Managers won’t be able to manage, producers can’t offer tips for getting on the radio, booking agents can’t fill Clear Channel venues, graphic designers won’t be able to buy MacBook Airs - there’s more to this than simple, “Record labels are greedy!”

And hey, if the labels fold, who’s gonna advertise on Buzzgrinder? See? The terrorists win!
