The new Coliseum EP tops my list this week, with Los Campesinos! right behind. The Caveman LP is also intriguing — primarily because the title is a direct reference to USWA Heavyweight Champion Koko B. Ware. Sure, you know the Birdman from the WWF, but he was just a midcard face there. And I ain’t talking kayfabe.
Oh yeah, there are a bunch of box sets and reissues, too. Christmas is around the corner, after all.
Double oh yeah, my birthday is this Sunday. Hint, hint, hint.
At first glance, I thought this week’s batch of new releases was pretty thin. Upon second glance, I realized that I was right. But at least we’ve got new stuff from Russian Circles, Tom Waits and Woodsman. I’ve heard mixed things about the new Gringo Star, too. Let me know if I should bother with it.
Plus, if you want to continue pretending cassettes are cool, there’s a giant Of Montreal box set.
The new Richard Swift 12-inch EP is golden, as are the records from M83 and My Brightest Diamond. Also worthy of your time: The Mommyheads, Rob Crow and Puscifer. I haven’t explored much beyond that, but there might be a couple other worthwhile albums in this week’s batch of new releases.
Haven’t done much due diligence this week. That said, I can recommend releases from Ryan Adams, Crooked Fingers and Look Mexico. Other than that, I’ve got no clue. The bonus tracks for the Yuck reissue are good, too. Don’t know if they’re worth buying the entire record again, though.
Anybody have opinions on the new stuff from T.W. Walsh, Björk, Absu, Ben Lee, Rocket From the Tombs and Andrew Bird? Haven’t heard enough from any of them to form a meaningful opinion.
Also, the William Shatner artwork is epic. Hint hint, Jay.
Lots of interesting re-releases/best-ofs this week: The Jesus and Mary Chain, Anvil, The Stooges and Nirvana. Notice that I left out Pink Floyd. Don’t worry, I’m prepared to get nuked in the comments.
Worthwhile new stuff includes Mastodon, Rwake, Arthur Russell, Wilco and the CD release of The Mindeater from Bonnie “Prince” Billy and The Phantom Family Halo. (Note to Travis Lee: I am still planning to mail that to you. Sorry for being a bum.)
Also, let me know if the new Bill Frisell, Spank Rock, Craig Wedren, Dum Dum Girls or Blink-182 records are worth checking out. Just kidding on that last one. I know it’s top of the pops.
The latest — and last — album from Glen Campbell tops the list of new releases this week. And I’m not just saying that because he covered a Guided By Voices song…but that doesn’t hurt, either.
Other stuff worthy of your time includes the Brian Jonestown Massacre singles collection, as well as Male Bonding, Beirut and Hella. I’m also intrigued by the Cymbals Eat Guitars, Icarus Line and Tommy Keene records, but I haven’t spent much time with them.
Oh yeah, and I was right. That Tom Wopat jam from a couple weeks back is indeed all kinds of bangin’. Just a good ole boy.
Here’s another spate of weak releases. That said, records by two inimitable Steves help brighten up this week — Stephen Malkmus and Stephin Merritt, that is. Thankfully, no new Steve Martin bluegrass albums…yet.
I know I’m sleeping on a couple other albums this week, but I can’t help it. My eyes are peering anxiously toward next week, when the last Glen Campbell record hits shelves. And yes, I’m serious. So eat that.
I know it’s been a while — both for me and for the new releases — but things will be picking up now that I’m able to sleep more than three hours at a time and I’m not working two full-time jobs. Speaking of which, my new job entails hosting After Dark on WFPK here in Louisville. So tune in if you want to be lulled to sleep Monday through Thursday between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m.
Plus Seth is posting again. So it’s just like the old days, except I have less hair on my head. And more on my back.
With all that blah blah blah out of the way, I’m not particularly intrigued by this week’s offerings. In fact, two releases at the top of my list aren’t even music. They’re comedy albums from Michael Ian Black and Marc Maron.
As far as bands and such, you might want to consider new stuff from Army Navy, Sleeping Bag and Anni Rossi. The two-part Against Me! reissue seems interesting as well, but I don’t know if all the extra goodies are worth it.
Also, I’m assuming the Gaither Vocal Band and Tom Wopat records are bangin’ pretty hard.
Yes, there are new Helms Alee, Jeff the Brotherhood, Centro-matic, Bon Iver and Ty Segall records out. But the only thing that really matters — and we all know this — is Weird Al. Duh.
