Buzzgrinder’s Favorite Muxtapes

No, not mixtapes. Muxtapes. The more tech-savvy among us with their newfangled RSS readers and what not probably started hearing the buzz about Muxtapes about a month ago, when it launched to immediate praise from music nerds all across the interwebs. I’m not sure why it’s so cool. Other than the fact that it’s really simple, doesn’t have copyright restrictions (yet) and it plays on your iPhone.

However, since its launch, it has become the outlet of choice for bloggers to one-up each other with their amazing music taste in 12 songs or less. So, in an effort to improve the signal-to-noise with so many Muxtapes, we’ve collected our personal favorites to present to you, dear readers. (more…)

Anathallo Posts Noni’s Field

Anathallo posted Noni’s Field, a track from their upcoming release, Canopy Glow, Friday. The band also posted a blog with some details about the song:

Coincidentally, the lyrics took some inspiration from a poem by Franz Wright titled, “Arkansas, Good Friday.” It seemed appropriate to upload the song today…

If this is any indication of the new album’s direction, we’re in for sexy times.

Andrew Bird Collaborates With Dianogah

Lyricist/violinist/whistler extraordinaire Andrew Bird (I wonder how many times he’s been called that) has been collaborating with Chicago post-rockers Dianogah for their new album.

Last year, Bird and Dianogah teamed up for a Daytrotter session, and tomorrow night, February 28, they’ll perform together at a Barack Obama benefit show at the Hideout in Chicago. But the collaboration has now stretched to Dianogah’s new album. Unpronounceably titled qhnnnl, the record features Bird’s contributions on four songs: “a breaks b”, “andrew jackson”, “sprinter”, and “es posible fuego?”. Yes, all of that is supposed to be in lower case.

The Daytrotter session showcases a bit of their work together, along with some discussion on the creative process from Mr. Bird. I recommend A Breaks B in all its warm, instrumental goodness.

Digital Releases Might Start Including More Extras

Digital music sellers like iTunes might start including stuff like better album art, lyrics and liner notes:

According to label sources and pirate network tracking firms, fans downloading full albums from BitTorrent sites almost universally choose files that include scans of the CD booklet over those that don’t.

Of course, there is little that can be done with those scans other than view them on a computer. Imagine if the music industry and the digital music services got together and offered an official way to access the same content, but make it available on portable devices as well as make it interactive.

Wasting Time With Online Music Subscriptions

Eliot Van Buskirk at Wired tried to cancel his online music-subscription services. Though not as painful as canceling your AOL account, he was on the phone for 30 minutes with Napster.

When she took me off hold again, I told her I wanted to cancel because 2007 was the year 3 of the major labels started selling music without DRM. Back on hold.

She came back — presumably after consulting a manager or the internet to find out what DRM is — and then responded, “I don’t understand, because all of our music contains DRM.” Back on hold.

Mac Users Buy More CDs

A market research firm confirms what we’ve known all along; Mac users are music snobs, too.

32% of Mac users reported buying CDs in the third quarter of this year, compared with 28% of PC users.”

See? Blame those lame PC users for all those record label layoffs.

Secret Green Day Side Project?

A new band, Foxboro Hot Tubs, popped up on the Internet recently, and their vocalist sounds a heck of a lot like Billy Joe Armstrong of Green Day.

We’ll leave the speculation to you, but in any case, it sounds good and all six songs posted can be downloaded. [link, Shoutmouth]
