You weren’t at Bamboozle. Neither was I. But other people went, and wrote stuff about it. That’s what this is.
About 50 people were injured from moshing, or as I like to call it, “meat heads pushing skinny white kids around.”
Sebastian Bach sang three songs with The Sleeping. There’s even video of the spectacle.
There were lots of parents at Bamboozle, too. They hung out at the ‘parents’ lounge’ and “work on laptops. Read books. Talk about gas prices, food prices and property taxes. Call or text their kids.”
Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes talked about recording with Busta Rhymes.
Plenty of photos on Flickr, and crappy cell phone videos on YouTube.

Pennsylvania kiddies, prepare to crap your pants: Demon Hunter is bringing an old friend back to life.

I’ve seen a lot of those “MTV bands” who blew up and out after debuting on that (maybe not so) wonderful channel. But one band that I’ve kept up with is We The Kings. Seeing them play for the third time at the Norva Theatre in Norfolk, Va., was still as good as the first time, when they were opening for Boys Like Girls.
The opening bands (Sing It Loud, Charlotte Sometimes, The Cab and Valencia) were all great, getting everyone dancing and singing along. But of course everyone was there for We The Kings. With so much energy, the crowd was hyped up and loved them. In between songs they cracked jokes, took crowns from girls in the crowd in honor of Travis’s upcoming 23rd birthday and just had all-around fun. Downside to seeing them live? The massive amounts of 12-year-olds with their mothers tagging along.
Coachella 2008 was predicted to be mediocre in comparison to past years. Having gone myself last year, I was unimpressed by this year’s lineup. News trickling in from the weekend seems to indicate, though, that performances from Portishead, Prince, Kraftwerk, Gogol Bordello and others were enough to make up for the less-than-ideal showing overall.
Download Portishead’s set in full, watch a video of Prince playing Creep and get all the Coachella highlights after the jump. (more…)

It appears nothing could stop Converge in Dallas Wednesday night — not even acts of God. As Coliseum, Genghis Tron and The Red Chord played, a storm swelled but held back in the Deep Ellum area of downtown Dallas.
Right before Converge went on, a torrential downpour was unleashed that continued as the band began their set. Three to four songs in, the power went out. At first, the explanation was that someone pulled the fire alarm. In actuality, it was the storm — lightning struck the venue!
Power vanished except in guitarist Kurt Ballous’ setup (for some reason) and he began The Saddest Day sans vocals and bass, complete with sing-a-long from the crowd. The power slowly returned as the song ended, and the band continued with songs off Jane Doe, You Fail Me and No Heroes.
Said Jacob Bannon from stage, when considering the storm as an act directly from God aimed at the show: “I don’t believe in God, and if you do… well, this band is better than God.”

Long hours of work and warmer tempatures tend to make me avoid dark venues with no fresh air. However, I’ve been a fan of The Forms for a number of years, so I made an exception for these guys. I arrived on the first note, pretty much, and it felt like a warm evening breeze (even if it did have the stench of B.O. from someone standing next to me). They put on a fun performance, with inside jokes and light-hearted band hijinks that I won’t explain here. You should really try to catch the band if they appear within 50 miles of your apartment.

Come on metalcore bands — top this! An Albatross rolls INTO the show in their friend’s car.
“we had the brilliant idea to drive our friend Elliott’s car into the venue as we started playing. It was epic. The show started as his luxury vehicle entered the venue revving up the engine and honking the horn repeatedly. We turned off all the lights in the room and used the headlights for the stage lighting. The car horn was used as percussion throughout the show and the car itself encountered a serious mosh!“

Even as I left the 6 train I could see kids that seemed a little out of place. The Blender Theatre is located in one of the wealthiest sections of the city, so seeing tight black jeans and hoodies is an indicator of what the night would bring. Plenty of beards, piercings, and Converge shirts? C’mon kids, don’t be “that guy.” (more…)

Film mega-star Kevin Costner (above, getting accosted by a woman on his way to the stage) has a band called Modern West. They play random concerts around the country when Mr. Costner has some free time. He was in my general vicinity of Charleston, S.C., shooting a thriller entitled The New Daughter and decided to play a show at The Music Farm. The band also consists of John Coinman from punk legends X and Bobby Yang, who is said to be the best banjo player in the southeast.

Meeting up with bands that are readers of Buzzgrinder is always a strange thing. Heck, Joshua Mikel, the drummer from Look Mexico, wrote a piece for Buzzgrinder last year (Vote Or Dye? Author Andrew Keen, 2007). (more…)
