United Nations Album Violates Copyright, Stores Refuse to Sell

United Nations encountered a hiccup trying to sell their new self-titled album. Says Thursday frontman Geoff Rickley,

“We’ve gotten some cease-and-desists. We worked [on the cover art] with this British anarchist artist named James Cauty, and he did all this great stuff. But it had some copyright issues, and that’s why all the distributors and stores refuse to carry it. We have 1,000 copies of this album sitting around with artwork that has been banned and we’re trying to figure out what to do with those.”

I’d think one would be aware that putting flames on a famous Beatles image might just be a copyright violation.

HORSE The Band Drummer Arrested?

This isfrom the AbsolutePunk RSS feed, so take with a grain of salt: Is HORSE The Band in trouble again?

“We apologize for the show ending early. The drummer for HORSE the band was arrested for undisclosed reasons - that’s why they were unable to play. The band chose not to give refunds to their fans, as they need that money for bail and other expenses attached with possibly having to cancel any of their upcoming tour dates.”

Holy crap — back in July, I joked that their new drummer, Daniel Pouliot, liked being arrested.

Album Of The Week: Wrench In The Works - The Lost Art Of Heaping Coal

Artist: Wrench In The Works
Label: Facedown Records
Buy: Amazon, Amazon MP3, iTunes, Facedown

Jay: You order a pizza, it arrives and you pay the normal price. You take a bite, swallow, and some of your teeth crack. You’re in some pain, but you notice that there’s platinum plating under all that mozzarella. And so it is with this release: You have some idea of what you’re going to get because it’s on Facedown, but it turns out to be something rather unexpected. At first, you might be a little ticked, but you just paid $10 for a twelve-inch diameter of a profitable, eBayable metal. In this case the surprise is a pleasant and chaotic mix of rock, punk, and hardcore in the vein of older Converge or Spitfire with some hints of melody. To top it off, it’s easier to pass through your system ten tracks of this band than a nice bite of a grossly jagged, tasteless chunk of metal.

Seth: After seeing these guys perform, listening to this album was a joy. The Lost Art Of Heaping Coal has a nice, classic sound to it. It’s a loud album — technical, with some sing-alongs. It’s a perfect mix of raw hardcore “groove” with the precision of metal. And they’re just a three piece. Excellent.

:: MTV Video Music awards are taking place as I’m writing this. Stereogum is usually a good spot to get your celeb-trash VMA fill.

:: If you get the chance to catch the Mogwai or Fuck Buttons on tour pick up the split EP. Each band does the other a favor and covers the other.

:: Phantom Planet has been featured on Daytrotter.

:: Tooth & Nail has a new website. I’m not a fan.

It’s ‘Raining McCain’

Did you happen to miss the finale of the Republican National Convention last night? Well you didn’t miss much. What you did miss, though, is John Rich (of Big And Rich fame) supporting John McCain with an aptly titled song, Raisin’ McCain.

In an effort to be bipartisan, remember our post about Obama-themed songs, let’s take a look at other songs about McCain that should have been written instead.

Look how witty and original I am! Make your own…

Simple Plan Gives Shout Out To The Young Teens

simple-plan-canada.jpg

Helen Halbert is my new favorite show reviewer in the world. She attended a recent concert which featured Simple Plan (above), Faber Drive, Cute Is What We Aim For and Metro Station - and she reported it was a snoozer!

Each band’s forgettable brand of emo pop was greeted largely with indifference, despite surefire rabble-rousing ways like a swear word shout-along. They also learned early on not to play call-and-response with an audience unfamiliar with their latest MySpace hits.

Oh, that’s rich. A “swear word shout-along?” Bands still do that?

Also of note is the creepy womanizing from Simple Plan:

“Simple Plan gave the show their all and knew how to flatter their fandom—although, the hot-girl shoutouts were a bit unsettling considering that the 13- and 14-year olds were, in fact, girls.”

Rage Against The Machine Goes A Cappella

After Rage Against the Machine’s show got shut down in Minneapolis thanks to the Republican National Convention, the band led a peaceful rally with thousands of their fans, doing a cappella renditions of Bulls On Parade and Killing In the Name Of. And someone got the whole thing on video, of course.

Bri here looks like he’s in the running with Our Lord of Western Iconography to look like the Savior Hisself. What damns this design, though, is the fonty words; more blessings could have been bestowed on that design element. Amen.
