Bonnaroo Announces 2012 Lineup

Bonnaroo 2012

I’ve never been to Bonnaroo, and I was hoping to keep it that way in 2012. Nothing against AC Entertainment (the promoters of the fest) or the thousands of stinky hippies that populate Manchester, Tenn. a few days each year; massive outdoor festivals just aren’t conducive to a great live music experience most of the time.

Sadly though, it looks like my streak will end here, thanks to three words: The Beach Boys (even though it’s with John Stamos). You can also throw in these two words: Bad Brains. Sure, there are some good undercard acts as well, but I’ve either seen them or could see them without the gentle waft of patchouli.

Oh yeah, and Radiohead is headlining. Yawn.

Beach Boys Release Smile Sessions Track List

Beach Boys Smile Sessions track list

In addition to a release date for the latest iteration of The Beach Boys’ shelved 1966 record Smile, we have a track list as well. The Smile Sessions, which hits stores Nov. 1, will have a few different packaging options — one of which includes a box set comprised of five CDs, two 12-inch records and two seven-inch singles. Sure, it’s going for $170…but hey, you know it’s worth every penny.

Seapony Is a Band for All Seasons — But Especially Summer

Seapony interview

Summer is all about good weather and good music. And no other band will embody the summer feel than Seapony. Hailing from the great music mecca of Seattle, this dreamy surf-pop sound is sure to be found on any quality summer mix.

But don’t be so quick to lump this band into one season. Seapony will certainly be a vital part of music for the quite a few seasons to come.

I recently sat down with Jen from Seapony at the band’s Brooklyn debut for Northside Festival. We talked briefly about what summer means for Seapony and the band’s upcoming plans. And with the best set of the weekend, I highly recommend checking out this band if you can.

The Beach Boys Reunite on Single to Raise Funds for Japan

All the “will they/won’t they” talk about a Beach Boys reunion hasn’t been settled just yet, but the remaining members of the band did record a single to help raise fund for Japanese disaster relief.

Al Jardine corralled Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Bruce Johnston to lay down vocals (along with an archival track from he late Carl Wilson) for a new version of Don’t Fight the Sea. It’s backed with an a capella mix of the 1968 song Friends.

The single — which features the first 1,000 copies on white vinyl with a red label to represent the Japanese flag — will be available tomorrow. Additionally, about 90 of the records will be signed by the four remaining Beach Boys. Per Jardine:

We felt that the song had a nice basic message of friendship. I also like the idea of that song, because the vocals are a bit under appreciated. So this release was a perfect place to showcase the idea of harmony and friendship. Everybody is behind it 100%, that’s the nice part.

What Are You Buying on Record Store Day?

In about 63 hours, I’ll be throwin’ some ‘bows at Ear X-Tacy to make sure I get my hands on every Record Store Day release I need. Of course, “need” is hardly the proper term, but when you’re standing there holding the last copy of a Japanese Les Savy Fav import on coke bottle clear and orange swirl vinyl — well, that’s when “need” is the right word.

With that in mind, here is my list of RSD desirables. In looking through the list, there were some entries I objectively knew I should care about. For some reason, though, they just didn’t make me tingle. Below, you’ll find the tinglers. Not all of them are must-haves, but they’re all tinglers nonetheless.

  • Bad Brains – Pay to Cum seven-inch
  • Bad Brains – God of Love
  • Big Star – Third (test pressing edition)
  • Buck Owens – Close Up the Honky Tonks/My Heart Skips a Beat seven-inch
  • Deerhoof/Xiu Xiu – Almost Xiu Xiu, Almost Deerhoof seven-inch
  • Lady Gaga – Born This Way picture disc (for my wife, I swear)
  • Mastodon/ZZ Top – Just Got Paid seven-inch
  • Manchester Orchestra – Simple Math seven-inch
  • Piebald – Vol I-III Triple Gatefold 3LP Special Edition
  • Rival Schools – Wring It Out seven-inch
  • The Beach Boys – Good Vibrations/Heroes and Villains 10-inch
  • The Flaming Lips – Heady Nuggs box set
  • Arthur Russell – World of Echo
  • Fucked Up – Town Comp
  • Superchunk/Coliseum – Horror Business/Bullet seven-inch
  • Touché Amoré – To the Beat of a Dead Horse
  • Joan of Arc – Presents: Don’t Mind Control

Needless to say, my eyes are bigger than my wallet. But what about you? What are your tinglers? And by that, I mean records that you want to buy this Saturday. Perv.

Old and Jaded: My Abstract Tribute to Stretch Arm Strong

Dashboard Confessional

For shame, little peanuts! I got no listening suggestions last week so I spent my time listening to old Thursday and Taking Back Sunday records. I place the blame solely on you. Although, Autobiography of a Nation is still a pretty bad ass song.

Welcome to another Old and Jaded, Buzzgrinderers! This edition promises to be especially jaded — so strap in.

I bought my ticket to the Dashboard Confessional Swiss Army Romance tour, and I honestly don’t know what to expect. I mean, are they still popular enough with the kiddies that I’m going to be surrounded by 15-year-olds? Or is it going to be people my age standing toward the back of the venue with our hands in our pockets or arms crossed?

For the record, arms crossed was my go to stance back in the day.

In honor of the show, I’m going to restart my Makeout Club account with the profile heading, “Swallow, choke, and die.” I always liked how MOC said they weren’t a dating site, but yeah right. That’s all it was; Match.com for kids who liked The Anniversary and had Exploding Dog tattoos.

John Stamos Wants To Help Ruin Beach Boys’ Legacy Even More

The Beach Boys on Full House

Doing his part to help drag The Beach Boys’ legacy through the mud on Full House just wasn’t enough for John Stamos. So now Uncle Jesse is intent on taking it a step further, producing a Beach Boys-themed musical film.

The only real comfort is that it won’t be another debacle like 2001′s The Beach Boys: An American Family, which Stamos co-produced. However, there’s not much solace to be found. The former Mr. Rebecca Romijn says this project will get the Mamma Mia! treatment, co-opting classic tracks and using them in some ham-fisted story.

It gets even better, though. He compares it to another paragon of artistic integrity:

The deal is to redo the songs with the actors singing, sort of in the way that they do on Glee. They kind of keep some of the same arrangements, but to have newer, younger people singing them.

Have mercy.

Morning Buzz: The Beatles, Wyclef Jean, My Morning Jacket

:: If you’re waiting for Beatles songs to hit iTunes, you shouldn’t hold your breath just yet.

:: Looks like Wyclef Jean is serious about the whole president of Haiti deal.

:: My Morning Jacket is working on a new record. No word how many Prince takeoffs this one will include.

:: Small Brown Bike is in the studio with J. Robbins working on a new album. No word on how many Prince takeoffs this one will include.

:: The Beach Boys aren’t too happy about Katy Perry‘s California Gurls. Well, they’ll probably be happier about it once they’re getting royalties for it.

:: That Sum 41 dude was hospitalized in Japan after being attacked by three unknown people. It’s unclear whether the incident stemmed from that album he did with Iggy Pop. Probably, though.

:: If you guess Decibel’s next hall of fame album, you can get a free subscription.

:: How can the Owl City dude have halfway decent taste in music and still make the music he does?

Beach Boys Reunion Show Might Happen After All

The Beach Boys might reunite

After that little dust up about the prospect of Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine getting back together for a Beach Boys reunion to celebrate the band’s 50th anniversary, it looks like there may be at least one show happening after all. Love and Wilson are still saying “nuh uh,” but Jardine is already so pumped about the possibility of a show that he wants a tour:

I want to go all around the world, but if this is the way it has to be, then so be it. We’re going to have to rehearse one hell of a show. My point is, if we’re going to rehearse and make this such a wonderful show, we should take it on the road. It’s the next logical step and it disappointments me that the other guys don’t see if that way. I mean, it really bothers me. I know Live Nation has their fingers crossed we’ll hit the road.

All of the mixed messages thus far seem to hint at the heart of the matter: A Beach Boys reunion will happen — once the little issue of money gets worked out.
